Pacific Cruise Development
Programme
south-pacific.travel with funding
support from PROINVEST has embarked on a
cruise shipping development initiative to assist countries expand their Cruise
Shipping industries. In 2003, a Cruise Market Intelligence Report
identified over 35 international Cruise operators visited the Pacific region,
1.3 percent of global capacity.
In July 2007, Mr Peter Semone was engaged by south-pacific.travel to develop
a Cruise Shipping Strategy for the region. Mr Semone undertook
consultations with key industry stakeholders inFiji, Vanuatu, Christmas Island
(Kiribati) & Papua New Guinea. The outcomes of the Strategy were
presented at a Regional Workshop held in October 2007 in Nuku’alofa,
Tonga. The strategy identified four thematic streams of focus which are
referred to as Strategic Beacons in the strategy. The four beacons
included Shore Excursion Activities and Land-based services, Marine
Infrastructure and Support Services, Institutional Management and Cooperative
Frameworks and Cruise Destination Marketing and Promotion. The Strategic Beacons
are supported by a checklist of twenty-two respective sub-themes, which are
broken down into actionable initiatives.
Cruise tourism provides many benefits to a wide range of industry retailers
in Pacific Island countries. More focus on developing the four strategic themes,
will see more of the benefits spread through out the Pacific region.
