Regional Action Strategy for Green Tourism in
the South
Pacific
Climate change has been a concern worldwide and is now one of the most
important issues discussed internationally. The impact of carbon emissions on
climate change is under debate and the aviation industry is starting to be
targeted as a contributor to global warming through carbon emissions. There is a
growing trend globally where international travellers are becoming more aware of
their "carbon footprint" and have a growing preference for destinations that are
"Green".

south-pacific.travel with the support
of PRO€INVEST
has developed a 'Regional Action Strategy' which promotes a market led approach
to Green Tourism in the South Pacific.
A draft "Regional Action Strategy for Green Tourism" was presented to key
tourism industry stakeholders in region at a regional workshop coordinated by
south-pacific.travel. The workshop highlighted that issues relating to Green
Tourism were central to the future development of the sector in the region; the
Pacific has many advantages in relation to Green Tourism products but equally
consumer demands, global trends and changing government policies in key source
markets had the potential to impact upon future tourism demand and growth in a
significant way. The workshop examined market and global trends and
identified potential impacts, particularly in relation to climate change, carbon
emissions and tourism in the South Pacific. The workshop was facilitated
by Mr Ross Hopkins and Dr Susanne Becken of TRIP Consultants who have been
engaged to develop the Green Tourism Action Strategy
